Yes we made it to the East Coast. We walked all the way to London, and as the path stops there we gpot a bit lost and ended up on a night bus to Romford! After a short sleep it was off to Tilbury, through Upminster.

After a day with some funny fishermen and a night at the Fort, it was the early ferry to Gravesend and a train back to Lonson.
More adventures there (and plenty food for me!) we turned to the fundraising and Chelsea.

All good stuff.

Now we are home and I have a new doggy pal who was in a sorry state. how can people be nasty to us? He is a Lurcher just like me and he has been called Drogba!

Lots of doggy love, Lamps xx

Fun in London

We're in the big city and still having a wonderful adventure.

After the Hell's Angels appeared, we left Windsor Castle and walked on until we saw some men in a field playing cricket. My helper likes cricket so we stopped so he could have a chat. While everybody was chatting, I smelled something delicious- bread! I traced it to a big box full of food. Nobody could have wanted it as it was just lying there. Quick as I could, I bolted down four sandwiches before anybody noticed. Then one of the cricketers saw me and we made a sharp exit.

All day we kept on walking. We slept somewhere near Richmond. In the morning, I was still very sleepy and couldn't face walking another 20 miles so I whimpered and told my helper. He said we could have a day off and go sightseeing. We went to an underground station and got an all-day ticket. I love trains, they have comfy seats and interesting smells. All day, we travelled around. People in London much have too much food as it's lying about all over the place. I found loads of tasty treats, especially chips.

By late afternoon, we were at the Victoria and Albert Museum. My helper tied me up just inside the door and went for a look around. I didn't mind as there were lots of funny things to look at and people to pet me. When my helper came back, he found me surrounded by Japanese tourists who were taking my picture. They thought I was part of the exhibition!

We camped last night at Brompton Cemetery. I think we might be heading to the Battersea Cat and Dog Home now to say hello before we resume our walk. It will be nice to meet some of the furry friends I'm raising money for.

Windsor Castle

We're at Windsor Castle waiting for the changing of the guard. What a great adventure we're having!

On Friday night we walked for ages then went to sleep on some grass. I climbed into the sleeping bag first so I was at the bottom and my helper was at the top. We stayed nice and warm. I was so tired and comfy that I overslept and my helper had to wake me at 8am.

We started walking and after a while, we passed a group of people who were learning to use scythes as part of a project for the National Trust. A nice lady called Sandra was teaching them, she likes to help people to re-learn lost skills. They had certainly got the hang of using scythes and they were doing a great job cutting the long grass. Sandra later left a donation on the Just Giving page, thanks Sandra!

It was beautiful walking by the River Thames and at last we reached Maidenhead, a very picturesque place where we met a lot of friendly people. After exploring for a while, we walked on and met a group of guys busking by the river. We loved their music and they must have noticed that I liked their boat so they offered me a ride! How exciting! They treated me really well, petted me and gave me some chicken. It was such fun floating down the river and my paws got a rest from all the walking.

It was quite late when we disembarked near Windsor  and we headed to a pub where my helper charged up his phone. A lot of people had finished their meals and gone home, so I helped the landlord to tidy up by eating all the leftover food from the plates. Yum!

We walked on until we reached Windsor Racecourse where I quickly claimed the sleeping bag. It's warm and I had a wonderful rest. This morning we went to a nearby BP garage to get some things from the shop. We met a nice lady who took a shine to me. She gave me a delicious bowl of milk and some doughnuts, what a treat!

Like I said, now we're at Windsor Castle. I was just woken up from a nap by a loud roaring noise. Believe it or not, hundreds of men have just arrived on motorbikes, my helper says they are Hells Angels. They look a bit scary and some of the tourists are running away. I'm not scared, in fact I bet they're carrying sandwiches. I'm preparing to look cute.

Walking in the dark

We are still walking now, it's dark so it's really exciting. Here's what's happened so far today:

Last night we slept on the bandstand in a park in Henley. We were up late as there were a lot of people about. We met up with some young people who were celebrating the end of Ramadan and one of them gave me a piece of barbecued meat-yum! Later a different group of teenagers were having a party with some music, they were very friendly. After a while, I crashed out. It was warm and comfy on the bandstand and I got a long lie until 7.30am when two funny men set up some equipment and started exercising.

We spent the morning exploring Henley, my helper really liked it there but we had to move on to continue with our walk. After a while, I started to feel really hot so we stopped for a rest near the course where they hold the Henley Royal Regatta. Something special must be about to happen there as there was a lot of hustle and bustle. I had a snooze there for a while then we walked on along the Thames.

A lot of people were out having picnics, I kept running up to them and looking cute in the hope that they would give me some bread. Strangely, people kept asking what kind of dog I am, lots of them had never heard of lurchers. Most of the doggies round here are labradors.

We're heading for Maidenhead now. We're nearly at Bisham Abbey, maybe somebody there will have a spare sandwich!

New Friends

I have so much news today that I don't know where to start!I've made lots of new friends starting with a cat called Harold who lives at the hotel where we stayed last night. Harold is very friendly and we had a good sniff at each other. Before coming to the hotel, Harold stayed for a while at an animal shelter so he's pleased that I'm helping our furry friends at Battersea.

My neck was terribly itchy during the night and this morning, Harold's helper noticed that I had a tick in my fur. After the tick got taken out, I felt much more comfortable. I probably picked up the parasite yesterday when I was playing in the long grass.

We stayed at the hotel until 11am as we needed a rest but soon we were on our travels again. It took a long time to get out of Reading as lots of people were stopping us for a chat. I got petted loads of times, it was brilliant. A kind man even bought my helper some lunch, a good thing I think as he's beginning to look very skinny.

Soon we were heading along a path beside the Thames. After a while we met a lady who walks dogs for a living and she had four doggies with her. What fun we had! We all had a really good play. The collie got a bit over-excited though and charged into me, knocking me into the river. Luckily I can swim a bit so I climbed out on my own. I don't usually like getting wet but it was ok as the weather was warm. We all had a good doggy chuckle!

After we left our doggy chums, I did something a bit naughty. I saw some cow poo and rolled in it. My helper was a bit cross and said I couldn't arrive in Henley smelling horrible, so he dunked me in the Thames again. Wet twice in one day!

We only walked about 10 miles today so I'm not too tired. Not sure where we're going to sleep tonight, we're looking around for a comfy place to camp. I wonder who'll grab the sleeping bag first!

A kind lady gave us £50 on the Just Giving page today which I really appreciate. This will help the nice people at Battersea to help dogs like me and cats like Harold.

At a hotel!

Oh, it's been another great day today! We had a very early start . We camped beside the canal last night, I slept on my doggy rug and my helper was in the sleeping bag on a narrow ledge by a swing bridge. I woke up feeling cold and tried to get into the sleeping bag for a cuddle. This didn't work so I lay on top of my helper's head. He got grumbly at this point so we decided to start walking, it was 4am.

Anyway, I soon felt warm again when we started walking. After a while, I met up with a new doggy friend and we had a fantastic time together, playing and chasing pretend rabbits. My pal and his lady owner walked with us for 6 miles.

By the time we arrived at Reading around 4pm, I was really tired and my helper was limping. When he went into the library, I fell asleep on the pavement outside. All the walking and playing with my new pal had worn me out. Soon we got on a bus where I had another snooze and we went to a hotel where I straight away fell asleep on the comfy carpet. We're in a bedroom now, I've been sleeping on a comfy blanket and having nice dreams. My helper has been splashing about in the shower. We've slept rough for the last week, so it's luxury to be indoors again.

A kind man left a donation on my Just Giving page today, thanks so much, my doggy pals at Battersea appreciate the support.

Still walking!

I've had the best day today. We spent the night in a shelter at Hungerford train station. I was exhausted so I climbed inside the sleeping bag for an early night. When I woke up, my helper was kind of shivering in a tinfoil blanket. I felt a bit sorry for him, I would have shared the sleeping bag!

We walked along the canal to Newbury. My helper doesn't like me going onto the narrow boats, but they are very exciting. When I saw a boat going through a lock with a black labrador on board, I couldn't resist jumping onboard to say hello.

Newbury was great, I found some good bread crusts there, my favourite! We got on a bus so my helper could buy some new boots at the retail park. He'd been limping a bit and his feet were awful smelly. The workers at the sports shop were very friendly and some of them petted me. We shared a Happy Meal at the retail park, I had the burger. The roll is my favourite bit. Then we got the bus back to Newbury. I love taking naps on buses as the seats are really comfy. On the bus, we saw a sign for Watership Down where the rabbit film was set (my favourite movie) and we also passed Greenham Common.

From there we walked on to Thatcham where my helper got some chips. He gave me a few, along with my can of doggy food. We are still walking and we hope to reach Woolhampton before it gets dark. The weather is lovely and I'm having great fun.

Tomorrow we're hoping to reach Redding and the start of the river Thames. I wonder if there will be narrow boats on the river.

Hungerford

We have reached Hungerford on our coast to coast walk. It is lovely here, just like a postcard!

Last night we slept at a place called Stanton St. Bernard where we camped for the night near the beautiful church. We set off early this morning and walked along the canal path. It was raining in the morning and my paws and fur got wet, I didn't like that but luckily it wasn't too cold and when the sun came out in the afternoon, I dried off. My helper's shoes are still wet, I'm glad I don't wear any! I love exploring near the canal path and I especially love the narrow boats. Sometimes I meet other dogs or people who pat me.

At a beautiful place called Great Wentyn, we met a kind man who turned out to be the vicar at St. Mary's church. He showed us round the church, I enjoyed having a good sniff around.

We're in Hungerford now and tonight we plan to sleep under the swing bridge, I'm tired from all the walking so I'll have no trouble dropping off.

Some kind people gave us money for my doggy friends at Battersea today, somebody also gave us £20 on the Just Giving page. This makes all the walking worthwhile!

Approaching Devizes

I am having great fun on my walk.

I arrived in London on Wednesday night and spent the night sleeping on a park bench. The next morning I visited Hyde Park where I found some tasty treats to eat, even a whole chicken leg! It was so hot that I had a swim in a fountain to cool down.

I got the train to Avonmouth. It was a hot day so I had to have lots of drinks of water. From Avonmouth it was a 4-mile walk to the coast at Portishead, and the Coast to Coast walk began!

That night I slept in some bushes a few miles from Bristol. I was very tired from all the walking and my helper had trouble waking me the next morning.

By 8am on Friday we were at the Clifton Suspension Bridge. From there we walked to Bristol and stopped for lunch by the river. We walked on all the way to Bath where we met up with my friend, Steve. That night we camped by the canal but it came on thunder and lightening, so we went back to town and slept in a doorway. That way my fur got to stay dry!

In the morning a kind man from the butchers' stall at the farmers' market gave me a big bag of bones. Everybody was very kind and we collected around £100 for my doggy pals in Battersea. Something scary happened, though when a bad man set his big dog on me on purpose. Some kind people in a jeweller's shop looked after me and phoned the police.

We walked on beside the canal. I had great fun jumping on the narrow boats and exploring them. Last night we slept in a gazebo. I was very tired and climbed inside my helper's sleeping bag. It was cosy in there!

Now we are nearly at a place called Devizes. I hope we can rest there as my paws are getting a bit sore. My helper says he has blisters too.

People have been leaving donations on my Just Giving page and this is helping to keep me motivated. I have now raised £144.92 as well as the £100 that we banked in Bath. Thanks to everybody whose has contributed!

We go from west to east. My two-legged companion has studied the maps.
I will follow my nose as usual and get us there! Follow the river I say. It really is quite simple!

Cheers!

Friday, 26 July 2013

Hi friends.
I have started a blog to keep you posted on my big doggy walk across England's green and pleasant land starting on August 1st 2013.

I will cock my leg at Avonmouth on England's west coast and again at Canvey Island on the east coast about two weeks later. We will walk back into London and join thousands outside Stamford Bridge for the return of TSO!

In between I shall leave my scent at various places, including Bristol, Bath and Windsor.

I will be raising money along the way for my four-legged pals at Battersea Cat & dog Home. You can contribute at my Just Giving web page http://www.justgiving.com/Lamps-theLurcher
